Here is the introduction:

What is the Success Recipe?

This book really wrote itself. We struggle and we push through failure and teeter that line between failure and success. It's a part of the human experience. I never realized growing up how much that struggle really defined me. When I came up with the success recipe, it just clicked for me. When I would talk to my clients about it or talk to friends about it, it clicked for them too. I knew I was on to something.

But before we talk about the Success recipe, let me first tell you about the failure recipe. You see, if you're going to have success, then you are guaranteed failure. I played youth sports growing up and it's one of the great things about competing. I tell people all the time, let your kids play youth sports. It's not so that they can make it to the NBA or the NFL or the NHL or the MLB. The chances are minute that they actually play pro ball. It's because winning and losing is clearly defined. You get to find out on a field, on a court, in a pool, wherever you're competing, whether or not you succeeded or whether or not you failed at your mission.

Now, you're not a failure because you lost. As a matter of fact, I don't even consider it losing. I consider it here learning. But you still have a mission that you need to get done when you play sports, and you either succeed or fail at it. So, before we can understand the Success recipe, we have to understand the failure recipe.

Doubt

The number one ingredient in the failure recipe is doubt. Doubt kills dreams. Doubt creeps up on us when we start to examine a task that's in front of us. For instance, stop and think about a goal that you would like to do. Really think about completing it. Do you feel the resistance to it? The little voice that tells you how hard it’s going to be? That's doubt. First, doubt doesn't allow for you to go full out, to play full out in your life. It will cause you to fall back to paralysis by analysis. When we over analyze a problem or situation, we decide not to move forward. It stops us when we could have been successful, and it becomes easier and easier to stop.

Apathy

The second ingredient of failure is apathy. Apathy sets in when you give up on your chances.  Life can get so hard that you can start “not caring” in order for you to cope and survive. We start to  pull back from everything. It is really simple.  We get hurt.. Then we decide, “I'll never do that again”. That withdrawal leads us down the path to apathy. The good thing about apathy is that it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It is just your body's way of trying to keep you away from pain. The body pulls the feelings back and don't have any feelings toward it and it keeps us away from pain. But unfortunately, it also keeps you away from joy. So, having that apathetic attitude will almost guarantee that you fail.

Ignorance

The third ingredient in the failure recipe is ignorance. I'm not calling anyone ignorant. I'm saying that we become ignorant to what it is that is stopping us. You see, I'm a full believer in the fact that we keep getting shown whatever our weaknesses are until we fix them. So if your weakness is food, then you will continue to be in positions where food is a problem, until you can figure out how to solve the issue. If your weakness is lack of self-control, then you'll be continually put in positions where your control is tested. Ignorance attacks when we turn a blind eye to those issues and decide to hided our head in the sand. We stay unaware to what it is that is stopping us and allowing us to fail. Closing your eyes to your shortcomings doesn’t help you or all the people that are depending on you. It poisons your efforts to get your goals, and all that does is allow for us to do is to fail.

Many of us have gathered these three ingredients; doubt, apathy, and ignorance and used them as seasoning for all of our favorite recipes and eat them lovingly every day. Then failure becomes the norm to the point to where we don't even recognize that it's failure anymore. It's generational. That affects your legacy. That stops you. We have to stop using the failure recipe.

When we're eating that failure recipe, we are really stealing from our gifts. We've all been given gifts in this world. We all have opportunities for us to use those gifts, but when we are practicing doubt, apathy, and ignorance we aren't able to those gifts to shine. It robs us of our resources. We don't have the resources, financial or otherwise that you would have if we just stepped away from this cycle of failure in our life. It robs us of our legacy.

When I'm saying it robs us of our legacy, I mean robbing us of a good legacy, because you're going to have a legacy whether or not you take action. You may have a legacy of debt that you leave behind. You may have a legacy of not completing the task. You are going to have a legacy. Why not leave a legacy of all the good you were able to do in this world? What if your legacy was creating a scholarship that sent a needy student to school each year?  My father, David Carr, Sr., used to talk about being the “picture at the top of the stairs”.  Have you ever noticed that people speak in reverence of family members that changed the family’s history?  That’s legacy. If you really want to have a great legacy, then we have to take the proper steps.

I wanted to write this book and bring other talented people in on it so that the world could have an idea about success and about leadership. You see, being successful is not easy. It is much easier to fail. It is much easier to stop. It is much easier to just pull back. Success is hard, but it is simple.

The SUCCESS Recipe

There's a simple formula to success. That very simple formula is DREAM. BELIEVE. WORK. ACHIEVE. REPEAT.

You first have to have a dream, so you have to have an idea of something that you want to do. Your dreams should be so real that you can describe every minute detail. Too many times in our life we dream in fuzzy black and white, but our nightmares are in 4K color.  It should be the opposite of that.  You know that you want to achieve it your dream, but are you really focused?

Then you must believe that dream. This step is the stopper for most of us.  We have a dream. We think about something we'd like to be able to do. Dreams are easy. The problem is that we have no belief system behind the actual dream. The moment that you start to dream your mind immediately starts to process doubt. The mind is just trying to protect you from the pain that you have experienced in your life before. The doubt script will say, “no way, you're doing that. There's no way you could do that. You came from a broken home. You can't have that. You don't have a million-dollar head start. You can't have that. You've never seen a relationship work out. You can't have that relationship.” Sound familiar?

We must develop a belief system in our dreams. When someone believes in something, the world may say that they are obsessed. The definition of obsessed is an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person's mind. Obsession is actually good when we are talking about our dreams and our goals, because it just means that we are dedicated to it. People will describe it in dramatic ways because obsession looks crazy to someone who is not dedicated to their goals and who does not have the belief. If you believe in your dreams and achieve them, then that reflects on them and shows them that they could have achieved their dreams. No one likes for their excuses to be taken away. We have to believe in our dreams and not worry about what the world has to say about it.

Once you have the dream and the belief, now we have to do the work. Just like Nike states in their ad campaigns, “Just Do It”. When you are working towards your goal you must understand whether it is something that you can already do, whether it's something that you can learn, or whether it is something that you can delegate. We have to know, when we're doing the work towards our dreams, whether it is something that we can do, learn or delegate. We have a level of skill that we have already mastered. What are things that you automatically know that you can do? Those are mastery level skills. Then, we have skills and tools that we need to be able to learn. This may be something that you require coaching to complete, where you need someone to be able to help. You can learn to do these tasks and grow your mastery level. Finally, there are certain things in our life that we should be delegating out.  These are tasks that either don’t truly feed your dream and will distract you, or tasks that are beyond your level of work that you bring in an expert to complete for you.  Proper delegation will scale your business and push you to the next level FAST. We must realize what tasks fall in which category while we're doing the work, and that will allow us to be much more productive. It's about productivity, but it's about having a mindset for that productivity for us to be able to do it.

Once we have a dream, we believe in that dream, we do the work toward the dream, we then achieve the dream. You get to the top of that mountain, you're able to achieve that dream. And you've got to stop and celebrate that win a little bit. It is so easy for us to talk about, to focus on all of the negative things that have happened in our life, all the things that we have failed at. Realize when you get a dream, be happy about the fact that you got that dream done and that will help you reset.

We have achieved the dream. Now it's just time to rinse and repeat. You can take this process that I just showed you and continue to make a change in your life. Go after your goals individually with this same process. Just dreaming it, believing it, working for it, achieving it, and then repeating it. The purpose of this book is to understand what not only I, but what so many other unbelievable successful people think about success, and how success and leadership work together.

I know you will enjoy what we are going to teach you and share it with someone. Teach these concepts that are within this book and it will bless your life. Let's get started.
